Review of How to Fail at Flirting by Denise Williams
HOW TO FAIL AT FLIRTING BY DENISE WILLIAMS
I'm in love! To Do: Tell EVERYONE ABOUT THIS BOOK! I was really unsure if I was going to love this book but after meeting both Jake and Naya I fell in love. This book flowed beautifully and had so much more than your normal RomCom, and it really kept you flipping the pages until you finished it basically in just one night... oh is that just me? But this story is about Naya, our narrator who is stressed out with the possibility of losing her job and is plagued by an old ex who has broken her more than she cares to admit. Based on the advice of her friends she makes a list of things she'd like to do to "get a life" and that is how she ended up next to Jake at a bar.
Sparks seem to fly instantly with the two, but not in the way where it seems at all rushed. The way Williams rights their romance makes it feel honest, real, and so completely sweet. Where's my Jake Shaw!? Just kidding don't tell my boyfriend! This book is really about finding your voice and choosing your happiness. It's about not letting past wounds dictate who or how you love. Lastly, it's about being confident in yourself, it's about being brave. This book just had so much going for it, and honestly, I think it will go in my top ten at the end of the year!
A small spoiler but I promise it's talked about early in the novel! But skip this part if you like not knowing. But one part I absolutely loved was the addition of Davis and how much he affected Naya. I just feel as though it was done correctly, and there is a sense of authenticity in this part of the story about what Naya goes through and the mind games played by Davis. It just gave the novel that exact push.
Stand out quote:
"Every time I woke up with him, I couldn't help but wonder if I was waking up to myself a little more." p133
- What about Jake makes it so easy for Naya to be herself, or even be a better version of herself?
- On page 104, Naya talks about begins to talk about race, why is this important to talk about and to understand?
- Why do you think Naya keeps all her troubles to herself?
- Naya has her friends, a close coworker, and eventually Jake in her corner, why is it so important to have people in your corner, especially when going through everything with Davis?
Thanks for stopping by!
