Review of The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

THE BOYFRIEND PROJECT BY FARRAH ROCHON

Well, this book was picked because Bookstagram made me want to finally see what all the hype was about! And I have to say it lived up to the hype. It's still the month of love and black authors for me and this one was made for this month. It's a RomCom at its core with serious techy vibes laced through just about every page. You follow the story of boss b*tch Samiah Brookes who works for a huge tech company in Austin and she is getting ready for a date with her semi-new boyfriend. When through the powers of social media realizes her "boyfriend" is on a date with another woman. She goes down there and chaos, humor, and cringe moments occur. She tries to move on from the two-time jerk but thanks to our modern world it was all captured on tape and they go viral. The only blessing from this mess of a night is the bond the girls make in their shared embarrassment. But that is only a quarter of the story.

*Cue in hunky new hire*

We meet Daniel Collins a cute new hire at Samiah's job, flirting occurs but Rochon gives us an amazing twist to the character that I shall not spoil for you all! But definitely gives the story a fresh take. The two begin to fall slowly and quickly for each other. While both of them have things they want to achieve and succeed at. I loved the friendships Samiah makes along with how the author never changed her personality to meet the expectations of those around her. Samiah is a (mostly) confident, strong, and a badass black woman trying to keep herself in the crazy world of the tech business. This story is about friendship and love and staying true to yourself.

Stand out quote

"She authored her own narrative. No one else had the power to write it for her." P74

Some questions to ponder:

  1. Samiah and her friends make a pact to swear off men for a period of time, do you think this is beneficial? Have you ever done it after a rough breakup?
  2. On pg. 132-133, Samiah talks about the pressures of being a black woman in the tech world, what points does she make, and do you agree with her?
  3. Is Daniel selfish for not telling Samiah that he'd eventually have to leave?
  4. In what ways do the girls help each grow?

Thanks for stopping by!
