Review of People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd

People Like Her by Ellery Lloyd

"It can really rob you of your faith in the human spirit, sometimes, the internet." P259

For someone who is actively posting on social media, this book is completely fascinating and unnerving at the same time. This is the story of Emmy Jackson a famous instamum who is completely Type A and controlling about her life and her image. We get a sneak peek of her life from the POV of her, her husband Dan, and someone who has become growingly obsessed with Emmy. The thing I began to like of the character of Emmy who quickly becomes an unlikable unrelatable character. The reason I say this is because I feel like writing a character that the audience can't relate to but is compelled to know how her story ends can't be easy. She is fake, controlling, and at times self-centered and self-serving.

This story is about motherhood at its root but it's also about grief and loss, it's about protecting your family. It's about revenge and ignorance. My favorite part is the POV of the Stalker because she is so twisted and heartbreaking and creepy, it's really well written in that sense. This book is in the end a cautionary tale for using social media and how it can affect people. And it will make you look at those instafamous accounts you follow a little differently.

Stand out quote:

"We are all just women - women trying to do enough, be enough, have enough, without ever having it all." p 120

Some questions to ponder:

  1. Do you think Emmy made it easy to be found?
  2. Do you think Emmy or even Dan wanted kids? Marriage?
  3. What does it say about societal pressures?
  4. Is Emmy a likable or relatable character? Why or why not?
  5. What were your thoughts on the ending?

Thanks for stopping by!
