Review of The Invisible Life Of Addie La Rue by V.E Schwab
The Invisible Life Of Addie La Rue by V.E Schwab
"Already seen. Already known. Already lived. "
This is a book that will stay with me for a long time. If you haven't already picked this up go pick it up now! Like right now! Because this book is worth all the praise it has been given. The writing style of Schwab is so unique and poetic it makes you want to savor each line over and over again. It''s a story about love, it's historical fiction, it's about freedom and relationships. Schwab's characters are also so well developed with so much depth and layers that even when you think you've figured out a character there's another layer beneath even that. Overall, the story drives home the idea of "be careful what you wish for" and the story is being constantly thickened and twisted that you'll never really know how it will all end for our Addie La Rue. I also love that the ending is completely unexpected, what I mean is that it's not your typical ending.
Speaking of, our main character is Addie La Rue. And boy will you remember her. She is a woman who is filled with wants and dreams and the longing to have autonomy over her life. She is born in 1691 n France, and on the eve of her wedding she cries out to the old gods, and one finally hears her. Now flash forward to 2014 and our same Addie La Rue is still walking around still alive and still trying to figure out life the way many of us have too. She just has the added bonus/curse of living for 323 years. The other two main characters are Henry, a lovesick book store employee who can't seem to find the path he's meant to be on. and Luc, our stranger who answers you from the dark. Addie is such a lovable character and you want what is best for her throughout. She is willful and stubborn, brave, and fearless, and she endures the unimaginable again and again.
Stand out Quote:
"That ideas are so much wilder than memories that they long and look for ways of taking root." p.77
Some questions to ponder:
- Would you make a deal? If so, do you know what you would wish for?
- Addie talks a lot about making marks, how does she make her marks on the world, even though she has her curse?
- On Page 103, Addie discusses her state of life, do you agree with her thoughts or disagree?
- In the end, do you think Luc knows Addies plans?
Thanks for stopping by!
