Review of In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren
In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren
We love a CL book and a holiday one at that? Sign me up! This book serves up all the vibes you look for when you want to pick up yet another Christina Lauren (because let's be honest we always get that itch to pick up one). But what is fantastic about this book is the amazing twist they throw at us. Its Groundhog Day mixed with every holiday RomCom, but even then there is a twist within that guideline. I really wanted to wait till December to begin reading this but I couldn't help it, and I'm really glad I just gave in and read it! It was cute, hilarious, frustrating, and sweet. It's about finding yourself and letting yourself be happy and open to the gift the universe wants to give you. It's about growing up and letting go. It re-establishes the idea that sometimes you have to be a different you to find your true self.
Our main character is Maelyn Jones who is always her happiest when she gets to spend her week-long Christmas vacation with her family and second family, something they have been doing before she was born. Mae is not where she saw herself at 26, she loves to want her job does but hates working in her position, it might be the last time to coming to the cabin, and her crush on Andrew goes unrequited yet another year. Everything seems wrong as she heads home to the airport. but one thing leads to another and one wish is granted and she ends up back at the cabin with the entire week before Christmas ahead of her, but how many times will she redo this week? What does she have to do to get through it?
"The only person whose expectations you have to live up to is yourself." p.264
Some questions to ponder:
- What would you do if you had to redo a day again and again?
- Do you think Mae goes about her days well? Why or why not?
- What did you predict was the lesson Mae had to learn in the beginning and how does it compare to the lessons she does learn?
- Do you think you would tell anyone or everyone about your redos?
Thanks and happy (earlier) holidays!
