review of The Wedding Date By Jasmine Guillory

The Wedding Date By Jasmine Guillory

It's never a bad time for a rom-com or for a Jasmine Guillory novel! This is my third book for this "series" but the first one in the lineup, and it didn't disappoint. Guillory writes such a fun and enjoyable story about two people who should be happy together but miscommunication is the death of them. My favorite thing about Guillory's writing style is she always has some of the best meet-cutes and the most developed women in her stories. It's really easy to get stuck in a mold of writing a rom-com like everyone else but somehow this along with the other in its series feels new and fresh each time I read them. A few major themes of this novel are communication, insecurities, and is food considered a theme?

You'll meet Alexa Monroe and Drew Nichols two professional and independent people who become stuck in an elevator. One thing leads to another and Alexa is now Drew's "girlfriend" for his ex's wedding, from there they can't seem to get enough of each other. Between flying back and forth between LA and the Bay Area ( I mean I can't be made at a long-distance relationship when you can easily afford to fly back and forth every weekend) the two realize how much they enjoy being around the other. But like most relationships communication becomes a huge problem for them. Alexa is an intelligent and insecure black woman and Drew, well he's an intelligent and confident white man. I found Alexa really relatable in a lot of ways and I did find Drew relatable only in the sense that he's like some many guys I've dated in the past, afraid to commit for a number of reasons. He's also just kinda frustrating and a headache most of the time. The one this I liked about Drew was that he didn't care about Alexa's size and he was always ready to champion for her when someone was being a dick to Alexa.

Stand out quote:

"It was probably just all that cheese." page 199

Some questions to ponder:

  1. Would you ever be a strangers date/girlfriend to a wedding?
  2. What does this novel say about communication?
  3. The book shows a lot of instances where food is a love language for them, do you find this to be true?
  4. Why is it so important to have the race conversation while in interracial relationships?

Thanks for stopping by! and don't forget to read the other five books in this series, The Proposal was one of my favorites!
