review of THE KISS QUOTIENT BY HELEN HOANG

THE KISS QUOTIENT BY HELEN HOANG

This was such a likable story with likable characters! It's one of those romantic comedies where you feel the frustration of the main characters and wishes they would stop being so silly and just love each other! One of the reasons I enjoyed this so much was that Hoang created such a relatable yet different main character than I'm sure most of us aren't used too. Although this is a steamy book it is still about not letting your insecurities control your life or your love. It's about letting go of the way you thought life was going to be and maybe just letting life be (was that too corny?) This is definitely a book I'll be suggesting next time someone asks about a good romcom!

The story is about Stella Lane who is autistic but hasn't let that held her back in finding a job she is not only passionate about but is really good at. She knows she is a difficult person to be around but constantly tries to better herself and to exude more confidence. Which is one of the reasons I loved her. But this all leads to her hiring an escort to teach her how to have sex without weirding off a man. That then leads to meeting Michael, a handsome escort who finds Stella to be everything, even if she doesn't see it. They eventually enter into a practice relationship to build up Stella's confidence. And we all know how fake relationships end in romcoms! Something I found really interesting and heartbreaking was how hard Stella is on herself for not being the person she thought she had to be, the words she says broke my heart each time. But these two and the other minor characters are such a joy to read and I found myself really enjoying this novel and I think you will too!

Stand out quote:
" In his eyes, she'd become the girl with autism, she'd be... less" p. 136

Some questions to ponder:

  1. Could you ever see yourself hiring an escort? For a fake relationship or for anything else?
  2. Hoang really helps to show what it is like for some people with autism, what stereotypes did you have before reading the novel and how did your ideas and thoughts change after reading this?
  3. What thoughts do you have on the gender swap in this novel? Stella being the wealthy professional and Michael being the escort?

Thanks for stopping by!
