review of BIG SUMMER BY JENNIFER WEINER

BIG SUMMER BY JENNIFER WEINER

" 'The plot. She thickens.' " pg 250

What an exciting storyline! This book was a joy to read, from the friendship woes of the main characters to the integral role of social media throughout the novel. It was fascinating because it poses the theory that social media can rule have huge control over your motivations, and it breaks down the notion that regardless of how happy one may look on the internet it isn't always the case. But the thing I loved most of this story was murder mystery element, the who-don-did-it aspect was clever and kept you guessing the entire time. You know that feeling of anxiety and thrill before the reveal of the big plot twist? This book served that up perfectly. I literally sat up from my sit when I realized who it was and turned to my boyfriend and said "This plot twist is great!" Weiner did a great job of constantly adding fuel to the flames as each chapter rolled on, I really never knew who it was going to be.

Our main character is Daphne Berg, a twenty-something plus-sized Instagram influencer who has just reconnected with an old friend, Drue Cavanaugh, after a huge blowout. Drue is asking her to not only attend her wedding but to be in her wedding. After considering it she agrees but the time away in Cape Cod for the wedding will be filled with beautiful photo moments, delicious food, and a surprise or two. Within the first few pages, you instantly like Daphne because she is relatable in a lot of ways. She is complicated because she has created this character and persona that she feels a need to constantly live up to but she is still constantly battling with her own insecurities.

Stand out quote:

"I couldn't have explained it, either, but I knew what it was like to be the center of Drue Cavanaugh's universe, how her regard could make you feel like the brightest, shiniest, sharpest, most perfect version of yourself, and how she could turn an ordinary day into an adventure." pg 206

Some questions to get you thinking:

  1. What motivates Daphne to attend the wedding?
  2. Do you think Drue actually changed? learned?
  3. What would you say is the main theme?

Thanks for stopping in and go read this great summer read!!
