Review of DARK TIDES BY CANDACE OSMOND

THE GILDED STONE: DARK TIDES BY CANDACE OSMOND

Well well well, what can I tell you about this fifth installment of this time-traveling fantasy novel? Uh AMAZING! Okay let me break this down for you, this series is one of my guilty pleasures. I found it while I was dealing with some serious Droughtlander (When Outlander is between seasons) and I needed a new fix (because I'd already watched the series ten times). This series is described as a cross between Outlander and Pirates of the Carribeanean and boy does it serve that all up! I'll go a little into the entire series in this review since it would be unfair the everyone to spoil anything in this next book. But there is some serious magic and beauty that Osmond writes within this series.

In book One you meet Dianna, the heroine of the story, her estranged father has just past away and so she goes back home for the funeral and goes through all the treasures and junk of her former life. You learn quickly that her mom was a pirate obsessed woman and hoarded a lot of different things from centuries before. As Dianna is going through it all one thing led to another (I won't spoil the moment) and she winds up on a pirate ship in the 1700s! Of course, there is a gorgeous leather-clad pirate and a group of other equally thrilling characters you meet throughout the stories as well as magic, tragedy, and shocking twists. This series is amazing because its about finding who you are and forming a family, even a family that is not so conventional. This story has intense romantic love but the thing that always stands out to me in Osmond's writing is how she is able to come up with so many awe-striking sceneries and visuals in each book. Writing fantasy really seems as if it would be difficult (as well as exciting) because it has to be original and creative, while also needing to be clear enough that the reader can see it themselves. (As a writer myself, I'm not so sure I could, in fact, write fantasy in such a way that Osmond does with these books!)

With this book specifically, it felt more like a trip down memory lane in a really beautiful way. I personally didn't know a fifth book was in the works until a few weeks before the book was released, but I'm so glad there is because it continued Henry and Dianna's story and gave me so much. This book is about the decisions we make the consequences they hold but it's also about forgiveness, for others just as much as for yourself.

But can we talk about that cliff-hanger?! And the fact that we have to wait a YEAR for the next one?!

Some questions to get you thinking!

  1. If you ripped through time the way Dianna has, would you be able to survive?
  2. If you went back in time right now, would your clothing, look, etc help or hinder you?
  3. If you could be thrown to any time which time would you choose?

Thank you so much for stopping in, all five books of Dark Tides is available to read so do yourself a favor and go read!
