REVIEW OF BEACH READ BY EMILY HENRY
BEACH READ BY EMILY HENRY
So this is the perfect "beach read" (pun completely intended). The thing I loved about this book was the layers of the story and the layers of each character. When I first picked this book as part of my Book of the Month subscription I thought it was going to be your average rom-com, which if you know me, I'm totally okay with this. But Henry was able to serve so much more in this book. She made me want to cheer, cry, scream, and fall in love with all of the characters, which is the entire point of a good book. Both of the main characters felt so relatable but in different ways. But my number one thing I absolutely loved about this novel was the way Henry deconstructed the normal rom-com and makes it feel fresh and new.
You meet the optimistic, January Andrews, a rom-com women's fiction writer, who has a successful career as an author. But when everything she based her love and understanding of love crumbles before her, she finds it hard to make ends met and to do what she loved for so long. So she ends off to a beach house to solve her writer's block (I personally need this *cries into pillow*) but things can't be that easy, as if by coincidence, another writer lives next door, Augustus Everett a literary author who would rather kill off all his characters then see them happy. But he is in a very similar situation as January, so a bet is made! They will switch genres and see who can write the best novel the quickest.
This novel is about a woman who's world view is ruined by one complicated truth, and she doesn't know how to get over this bump in the rode. It's about not finding your happy ending but rather creating a happy day. This was an amazing, complicated, and adorable story of finding yourself and maybe, finding your own happy days.

"Bad things don't dig down through your life until the pit's so deep that nothing good will ever be big enough to make you happy again. No matter how much shit, there will always be wildflowers. " pg 294
Some questions to ponder:
- Do you think there is a difference between a complicated truth and a beautiful lie?
- Why do you think Gus agreed to the bet?
- Was it fair for her mom to ignore her questions about January's father? Why or why not?
- Why do you think January's father's lies broke her heart so much?
