REVIEW FOR IN FIVE YEARS BY REBECCA SERLE
IN FIVE YEARS BY REBECCA SERLE
This book was such a pleasure to read and honestly filled with unexpected plot points that I loved! It was moving and exciting all in one breath. Serle writes at times in a very informative matter but with each paragraph packs such a punch in her words. It's a story with a lot of heart and just a dash of magic. (was that too corny?)
Dannie Kohen is the poster child for "Type-A" in the truest sense. She has every part of her life planned completely. Have you ever been on an interview for a job and been asked: "Where do you see yourself in five years?" Well, Dannie is the type of person who has planned and tweaked this answer and has done everything in her power to ensure it comes true. But as fate usually does, it takes your well thought out plan and flips it on its head. After a magically night, being purposed to her boyfriend (perfectly on schedule) she falls asleep and wakes up in an apartment that is not hers and a man that is not her fiance. PANIC. For one hour she gets a glimpse into where she will be in exactly five years. Once back in her present time, she can't shake this feeling that that hour gave her. And everything for the next five years feels false when she knows where she might end up.
Dannie is an ultra planned woman who's life is derailed after one hour in the future. But this story is about love at its core. Love in all its forms: familial, friendship, romantic, forbidden, and (the most important) self. It's about setting a plan but being ok with what fate has in store for you. Serle takes you on a fantastic journey and you really don't know what is coming for you as you turn each page or end each chapter. You will more than likely finish this novel in one day and then crave more! It was such a beautiful story.

"I used to think that the present determined the future. That if I worked hard and long, I'd get the things I wanted. The job, the apartment, the life. That the future was simply a mound of clay waiting to told by the present what form to take." Page 225.
Some questions to think about with your book club or yourself!
- Where do you see yourself in five years? What if you got a little taste of it?
- Dannie and David's relationship is unique, do you think they made the right choices throughout their relationship?
- Would you tell anyone about your time jump? Why?
- Do you feel like the Dannie, in the beginning, is the same Dannie at the end? Does she grow?
