Book Review for THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL

THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL BY ABBI WAXMAN

OKAY WHAT??? I loved this book so much I read it in one day! Was it because I (like my other book lovers) are Nina Lee Hill? Was it the amazing story of family, love, and books? Perhaps it was the great references to Harry Porter? Or even more so maybe it because it took place in Los Angeles and really felt that way? This book truly had so many things working for it!

You meet Nina Hill a 29-year-old, bookstore employee, born and raised in LA. Nina is filled with (to most people) useless trivia knowledge, keeping her solitary life as organized as possible,  a deep passion for books, and an above-average dose of anxiety. Her whole life it was just her, her traveling mom and her loving nanny... well things change in a flash when she finds out she, in fact, had a dad and now she has two vans full of immediate family members. This book is truly clever in its writing and Waxman makes you root for Nina while at the same time cringe painfully for her.

I honestly thought I had become overly obsessed with books as of late but Nina takes the cake for biggest book junkie. There are so many moments I found myself smiling because of something funny she said (mostly to the cat!) or because something absolutely adorable happened. This book is about family and how sometimes you have to change your idea of what you thought you knew about it. It's about letting people in even when you're content of living in your bubble.

ALSO IF YOU READ THIS AND DONT ABSOLUTELY WANT TO BE BEST FRIENDS WITH CLARE YOU ARE COMPLETE MONSTER!!

Here's the quote that stood out the most to me:

"Nina had looked around and realized she would never run out of things to read, and that certainty filled her with peace and satisfaction. It didn't matter what hit the fan; as long as there were unread books in the world she would be fine." (Page 183)

Some questions to ponder while you read this with your book club or by yourself!

  1. Do you think Nina's life would have been different if William were in her life? Was her mom justified to keep her away from them?
  2. How would you honestly react to finding out you all of a sudden where a sister, aunt and even a great aunt overnight?
  3. Do you talk to your pets the same way as Nina? (Or am I the only one? haha)
  4. Books play a crucial role in the plot and in a number of the character's life, but especially in Nina's who uses it as a crutch to keep people at arm's length, what do you use as a crutch?

Thanks for stopping by and reading. Let me know how you like or hate this book!
